When we first posted “pedaling for overhead” we received several emails accusing us of “Manufacturing the numbers”… Our attemtps to simplify have solicited more claims of innacurate numbers.

So, to make our point, once again, we decided to look at the global fundraising numbers from AIDS Network (ACT Ride, Red Ribbon, Bingo and other misc., fund raisers) and compare it to the total reported costs of raising the funds.

1. Total fundraising income $476,510.00. (Line 1B, IRS Form 990) This includes the ACT Ride, Red Ribbon, Bingo and other fundraisers

2. Total fundraising expenses (Line 44, IRS form 990) were $229,069.00

3. The above numbers show clearly that for every dollar raised it costs AIDS Network 48.1 cents to raise it.

It should be noted that on page one lines 9 A-C are blank. It is highly unusual for nonprofits with large fundraisers to not break out total income and expenses associated with major events in their IRS filed 990. What’s up with that??
