How does a white gay man who is living with AIDS and who has raised issues regarding the services provided by an AIDS service organization respond to invocation of race into the discussion, especially when the charge is made by the “first African American female Executive Director” of the agency?
How do I respond to the statement that my only qualifications to serve on the board of directors of AIDS Network was the fact that I am HIV positive and able to “credibly speak to the public about the common physical (e.g weakened immune system) and mental issues (e.g., dementia)”; totally ignoring that my qualifications include more than 20 years of experience in non-profit management?
How do I respond to the assertion that resigning before serving a full three year term is reason to discount the issues that have been raised, or that I “am not constrained by the truth”; that my continuing advocacy is an “obsession”; that those not given “100 percent deference” become the object of “disparagement” on this website.
It deserves no response other than to warn others: AIDS Network has decided to make an example out of me and are sending the message to anyone that dares to raise issues or express concerns: “We did it to Greg and we can do it to you as well”.
